Tentang JALA
JALA (Jaringan Advokasi untuk Nelayan) is the Advocacy Network for North Sumatra Fisherfolk. Founded by a coalition of NGOs and activists on 3 August 1997 in
North Sumatra, our mission is to unite local communities against trawling through campaigning, advocacy and capacity building in local fishing communities. JALA acts as a network organization, bringing together fisherfolk and NGOs to address the problems faced by local people, particularly the increasing poverty levels found in many traditional fishing communities. JALA’s mission and vision is to stop the exploitation of coastal areas in order to achieve sustainable livelihoods for the fisherfolk of north
Sumatra and the protection of local marine environments. JALA is working to strengthen the organization’s capacity and the role of traditional fishermen in
North Sumatra in this process, pushing for changes in government policies to protect natural resources in coastal areas and give more say to local fishing communities in local marine resource management.
